Ancients Format
(Redirected from Ancients format)
Ancients format is a format that is designed to mirror Open as closely as possible while addressing some of the issues that plague that format, essentially creating a more playable version of Open. Ancients allows nearly every card in print to be played, but it does have a list of banned and restricted cards, and it has a few rules modifications that were required due to changes in rules wording over time. The format is expected to change over time to adjust to new threats to its environment.
Ancients format is officially recognized by Phoenix Interactive and will be supported by them at major tournaments. The format was first announced on October 22, 2008. It is the result of the hard and continuing work of members of the Design Team, Rules Team, Playtest Team, and players-at-large, all spearheaded by Paul Dulaney.
Ancients format does not replace Open format and players should feel free to continue playing Open and organizing Open tournaments. However, Phoenix Interactive will not routinely support Open tournaments and will support Ancients instead.
In the common nomenclature, people commonly use the terms "Ancients legal" refer to cards legal in Ancients Format. It is also common for people to drop the last āsā off of Ancients.
